Bruno Calfat

Bruno Calfat holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Candido Mendes University (UCAM) and is a member of the Brazilian Bar Association, registered with the state bar associations of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, and the Federal District. He is a member of the São Paulo Bar Association (AASP); the São Paulo Lawyers Institute (IASP); the Brazilian Institute of Electoral Law (IBRADE); and the Brazilian Bar Association (IAB).

He founded the law firm Bruno Calfat Advogados on August 22, 2014, with the aim of serving clients in both advisory and litigation matters, representing them in judicial, administrative, and arbitration proceedings, as well as in mediations, negotiations, and dispute boards. In litigation practice, he has extensive experience in highly complex cases of national significance pending before State Courts, Federal Courts, and Superior Courts. He possesses solid and recognized experience in Constitutional, Civil, Civil Procedure, Contract, Corporate, Regulatory, Environmental, Banking, Antitrust, Consumer, Electoral, Real Estate, Insurance, Tax, and Social Security Law.

In recognition of his significant contributions to the legal profession and civil society, he was awarded the Tiradentes Medal by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro on September 16, 2009; the Collar of Merit from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro on December 16, 2011; the Medal of the Public Defender’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro on December 11, 2014; the Medal of the Order of Merit of the Military Public Prosecutor’s Office on November 10, 2015; the Medal of the Order of Judicial Merit of the Regional Labor Court of the 1st Region on December 1, 2015; with the Luiz Eduardo Pimenta Pereira Medal of Honor, awarded by the Association of Federal Judges of the 2nd Region – RJ/ES, in March 2017; and with the Collar of Merit Medal of the Court of Auditors, awarded by the Court of Auditors of the State of Amazonas, on October 15, 2021.

He served as an arbitrator at the Brazilian Center for Mediation and Arbitration of the Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association (CBMA) – ACRJ/FIRJAN/FENASEG; Alternate Federal Councilor of the Brazilian Bar Association; Councilor of the Brazilian Bar Association, Rio de Janeiro State Chapter (OAB/RJ); Vice President of the Special Committee on Legislative Monitoring of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association; General Legislative Counsel to the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association; Attorney General of the Brazilian Bar Association, Federal Council, for the 2019–2021 term; Member of the Commission on the Prison System, External Oversight of Police Activities, and Public Safety at the National Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office; Member of the Business Council on Competitiveness, Business Environment, and Agribusiness of the Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association; and Chair of the Special Commission on Water Resources and Sustainability of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association.

During the 2001–2003 and 2004–2006 terms, he served on the Brazilian Bar Association’s Bar Examination Committee, the Business and Public Franchises Committee (COMFRA), and the Committee on Compulsory Matters and Registrations. From April 2003 to December 2003, he served as Coordinator of the OAB/RJ Oil and Gas Commission. He also served, from June 2002 to April 2003, as a Court-Appointed Attorney with the OAB/RJ Ethics and Disciplinary Tribunal.

He began his teaching career as a Professor of Civil Procedural Law at Estácio de Sá University. He served as Coordinator and Professor in the Civil Procedure course, in the programs “Contemporary Civil Procedure: A Practical and Strategic Perspective” and the LL.M. in Litigation, both at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), until 2011. He served as Legal Advisor and Professor of Electoral Law at the Institute of Public Law (IDP).

He was a member of the Organizing Committee for the 9th Conference of Lawyers of the State of Rio de Janeiro, held in May 2005 at the Hotel Glória. He was a speaker at the 2014 National Lawyers’ Conference.

He is the author of articles published in specialized journals and periodicals and a lecturer, having served as a member of the Examining Board for the 25th Public Competition of the Public Defender’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
