Bruno Calfat Advogados represents a group from the real estate sector in a civil class action seeking to prevent the Municipality of Maricá and the State Environmental Agency (INEA) from granting environmental licenses or authorizing the construction of a real estate and tourism project by the group in the area known as Fazenda de São Bento da Lagoa, in Maricá.
The project’s construction works were halted in May 2023 by a decision issued by the former reporting judge of the case in the Superior Court of Justice (STJ). Following an appeal, the firm obtained a favorable decision from the Second Panel of the STJ, which denied the Public Prosecutor’s request to suspend the environmental licenses, thereby authorizing the project to resume.
The project, which involves an initial investment of R$ 4 billion, includes plans for three internationally branded hotels, a hospitality school, and an Environmental Reference Center, along with the creation of an environmental protection reserve.
In line with the principles of sustainable development, and after a licensing process that extended over many years across all levels, the project also includes the establishment of a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) and several initiatives aimed at the local community.
